This article describes Abilities and Spells in terms of their mechanics. If you are looking for the category, click here.

Abilities and Spells are actions available to Players and Non-Player Characters. Players must put their abilities and spells on their Action or Utility hotbars to use them or gain their effects. Abilities and Spells may have additional versions and scribing these to your Ability & Spell Book does not replace any prior versions; Players may choose to equip whatever level of ability or spell they desire. [1]

Techniques are a form of ability and are discussed in-depth here.

Difference between Abilities and Spells[ | ]

Spells

  • Spells require Mana to be cast.
  • Spellcasting can be interrupted by incoming melee attacks. [1]
  • Spells cannot critically succeed.
  • Spells can be Action or Utility, but cannot be Passive.

Abilities

  • Abilities do not use Mana. They are fueled by other resources, such as class specific resources or Endurance.
  • Abilities can critically succeed, doing more damage.
  • Abilities can be Action, Utility and Active or Passive.

Casting or Using An Ability[ | ]

UI Action Timer Bar

The Action timer bar.

Casting a spell or using an ability is typically a simple matter that only requires a few things. First, the spell or ability needs to be equipped on the appropriate hotbar. Second, your character must have the resources required to fund the ability or spell, and thirdly, your character must be in a capable state to do so. You cannot cast spells or use abilities when you're in a Near Death state or Silenced, to name a few examples.

The action timer bar (right) displays how long the current action/ability/spell is going to take. The numbers on the right indicate current progress and required time, respectively. The bar itself will also fill as the action completes.
